Why Having a Lawyer as Your Real Estate Agent Changes Everything

People always ask me how I ended up selling real estate.

The short answer: I didn’t leave law and television journalism. I combined them.

The Background Nobody Expects

I started my career as an attorney, practicing under the Joseph Law Group with a focus on real estate law. In 2004, I made what everyone around me thought was an unusual pivot — I left law to pursue television journalism. What followed was a decade covering some of Colorado’s most complex stories, earning the Colorado Broadcasters Association award for best investigative reporter and an Emmy.

My reporting has appeared on Fox News, CBS’s 48 Hours, and stations across the country. I learned how to take complicated, high-stakes information and make it clear, compelling, and actionable. That skill — more than anything else — is what I bring to real estate today.

Why the Combination Matters for My Clients

Most real estate agents are excellent salespeople. Very few are also licensed attorneys with courtroom experience and a background in investigative journalism. Here’s why that matters to you:

As a negotiator, my legal background is an edge. I approach every transaction the way I approached a legal argument — strategically, factually, and with the goal of winning. I’m not emotional about deals. I’m analytical. That translates to better outcomes for buyers and sellers alike.

As a marketer, my journalism training means I tell stories differently. I’ve always believed that every home has a story — and that the story, told well, is what makes buyers fall in love before they ever step through the door. Your first showing is online. If the photography, copy, and presentation don’t immediately communicate the life that’s possible inside that home, you’ve already lost buyers.

As an advisor, being a court-certified expert in real estate means I understand the legal dimensions of transactions at a level most agents don’t. Contract nuances, disclosure obligations, title issues, party wall agreements — these aren’t abstractions to me. They’re the fine print that can make or break a deal.

What This Means in Practice

In 2021, I founded Blueprint Divorce and Residential, a service offering no-cost, mediator-guided divorce to couples navigating the sale of a marital home. It’s one of the most emotionally and legally complex transactions that exists — and it requires exactly the combination of legal skill and human sensitivity that I’ve spent two decades developing.

For my luxury listing clients, it means a marketing approach that goes well beyond the MLS. Every listing I take gets a full-scale campaign: professional photography and video, print placement in 5280 Magazine, direct mail to targeted prospects, digital reach through LIV Sotheby’s global network, and a narrative strategy built around the property’s most compelling story.

For my buyers, it means representation that’s equal parts strategic and protective. I negotiate hard and I read contracts carefully. In a market where small decisions carry large financial consequences, that matters.

Why Denver, Why Now

I’m a third-generation Denver native. I’ve watched this city transform into one of the most desirable markets in the country, and I have relationships and local knowledge that come from a lifetime here — not from a relocation package.

The Denver Metro Association of Realtors has honored me with its Excellence Award every year since 2017. 5280 Magazine has named me a Top Producer every year since 2019. Real Trends recognizes me as one of the top 1% of brokers nationwide. I don’t share those credentials to impress anyone — I share them because they represent thousands of successful transactions and clients who trusted me with one of the most significant financial decisions of their lives.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling in Denver, I’d love to have a conversation. Not a sales pitch — a real one.
